Women's Cycling Bib Shorts and Tights

From racing in the desert to navigating in a downpour, our women's bib shorts and tights keep the most crucial components comfortable.

Do I need to wear underwear with cycling bib shorts?

The short answer is no. Bib shorts are designed to be worn directly against the skin. The chamois is engineered to manage moisture and prevent friction; adding a layer of cotton underwear creates seams that cause chafing and traps sweat against the skin, which can lead to saddle sores. If you are concerned about hygiene or comfort, using a specific women’s chamois cream is a much more effective solution than a base layer of clothing.

Why do some winter tights not have a built-in chamois?

You may notice some of our heavy-duty winter tights are padless. This is a deliberate design for riders who prefer to wear their favorite summer bib shorts underneath for the familiar comfort of their preferred chamois. It also adds an extra layer of insulation over the hips and core. However, for most riders, our all-in-one bib tights with an integrated women ’s-specific pad provide the simplest, most streamlined solution for cold-weather training.

Why is the compression level different across Rapha's ranges?

High-compression bibs, like the Pro Team models, are designed to support the muscles, reducing the micro-vibrations that lead to fatigue during a race. For those who prefer "all-day" comfort over "race-day" intensity, our Classic and Core ranges offer a lighter compression. This provides a softer, more relaxed feel that is easier to wear for six or seven hours during a social century ride or a bike-packing trip.

Can I use the same bib shorts for indoor training as I do on the road?

While you can, road bibs are often too warm for stationary indoor sessions where there is no natural airflow. Indoor-specific bibs or shorts use much lighter, more porous mesh fabrics to help heat escape your body. If you do use your road bibs indoors, be sure to wash them immediately after every session; the high salt content in "indoor sweat" can break down the elastic fibres (elastane) much faster than normal road use.

How do I choose the right leg length for my bib shorts?

We know that one size fits all doesn't apply to leg length. A short that is too long can interfere with the back of the knee, while one that is too short can cause the "sausage leg" effect where the gripper sits on the widest part of the thigh. Many of our women's styles are available in both Regular and Short leg lengths. We recommend choosing a length that ends approximately two to three inches above the knee to ensure the silicone gripper can sit securely on a flatter part of the leg for maximum comfort.
